“Poetic Politics” Call for Submissions

Poetic Politics: A Selection of Contemporary Scottish Political Poetry is now seeking submissions. This volume will be published by Luath Press in Winter 2016, and we’re looking for poetry submissions of any style on any subject relating to politics in Scotland, including but certainly not limited to ideas of:

  • class relations
  • climate change and ecology
  • Empire and colonisation
  • the EU and ‘Brexit’
  • faith and religion
  • human rights
  • international peace and security
  • immigration and diaspora
  • land reform
  • language and cultural policy
  • LGBT rights
  • media
  • nuclear weapons
  • poverty and welfare reform
  • refugees and migrants
  • Scottish independence and constitutional debate
  • war and conflict

Contributors must have spent some time living in Scotland but do not currently have to be residents. The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm on 15th May 2016.

Poets may submit up to three poems of no longer than 100 lines long per poem and unpublished. Poems may be in any style, including prose poetry, and will be accepted in English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic without translation. If submitting in any other language, please include a translation in one of the above languages along with your submission.

Poems may be submitted electronically or by post using the details below. Handwritten submissions will not be accepted. Submissions must be in the form of either a word document or a pdf without the poet’s name on the document. Please include full name and contact details in an email/letter accompanying your submission.

Although the anthology will be in print format, we would also welcome submissions of performance-based poetry, with a maximum time length of 3 minutes. We would be interested in publishing these on our website in video or audio format. The text of these poems are also welcome as print submissions.

The lead editors will be Katie Ailes (University of Strathclyde) and Sarah Paterson (University of Glasgow), with the support of a sub-editorial team. The editors’ decision will be final. If your work is selected for submission we will contact you by June 15th.

A free copy of the anthology will be provided as payment to contributors.

At this stage, in light of funding received, we are hopeful that we will be able to offer an honorarium to poets whose work appears in the anthology.

If you have any questions about these submissions criteria, please do not hesitate to contact us using the information below.
